Biography

Tony Smith is the Exec Officer of the Baking Association of Australia and has been with the association for 15 years. With a strong background in membership services along with many years in the hospitality and food industry Tony is a great fit for the Baking Industry. In 2010 he was instrumental in bringing all states of Australia together under a national body and now communicates and overseas the committee/councils in each state. Tony also has strong political background in negotiating where needed for the best outcome for the baking industry.

Addressing the skills shortages and apprenticeships: The baking industry like many industries is struggling to encourage people into the trade causing a massive skill shortage. The one issue that the BAA is addressing is the baking industry directly to school leavers. The BAA have devised a program known as showcase days and using a mentor program. The youth of the baking industry helping and encouraging school leavers to enter the baking industry. There are positive outcomes with this hand on demonstration days as it allows the mentors to actually talk to the school’s students.
